From Science to Consensus: Redefining Pulp Therapy in Paediatric Dentistry

We are pleased to share a newly published consensus paper developed through the International Association of Paediatric Dentistry (IAPD) Summit process.
What makes this publication truly distinctive is not only the 38 evidence-based recommendations, but how they were created.

Using the innovative IAPD Summit model, international experts came together to translate advances in pulp biology into clear, clinically relevant guidance for daily practice. The outcome represents a paradigm shift in paediatric dentistry; moving from aggressive intervention toward preservation-focused, minimally invasive care.

Developed through systematic reviews, Delphi methodology, and structured expert consensus during the IAPD Porto Summit, and led by Vineet Dhar, Chair of the IAPD Science Committee, these recommendations exemplify the strength of the Summit model in bringing science, dialogue, and clinical relevance together in a focused and transparent way.

This work sets a new benchmark for collaborative guideline development and demonstrates how well-designed scientific dialogue can shape the future of paediatric dentistry worldwide.

We invite you to explore the full publication and consider its implications for clinical practice, education, and future research. We also extend our sincere appreciation to all attendees for making the Porto Summit a memorable and highly successful event.

🌐Spotlight on IAPD Consensus Recommendations

This month, we’re shining a spotlight on the Consensus Recommendation on Paediatric Dental Imaging Recommendations.

A comprehensive clinical examination in paediatric dentistry always begins with careful visual inspection, which must precede any radiographic investigation. Radiographs are an essential adjunct to clinical assessment and are indicated when additional diagnostic information is required for the detection of dental caries, evaluation of eruption disturbances, assessment of trauma, monitoring of treatment outcomes, identification of periodontal or bony pathology, and investigation of dentofacial development or oral disease.

The IAPD recommendations provide guidance on the appropriate timing, selection, and frequency of dental radiographs in the paediatric population. Imaging should always be justified on an individual basis, tailored to the child’s clinical findings, risk assessment, medical history, and national regulatory requirements, with priority given to minimizing radiation exposure while ensuring accurate diagnosis and optimal care.
