The 3rd IAPD Global Summit, themed Pulp Therapy Rooted in Evidence, held in Porto, Portugal, marked a pivotal moment in paediatric dental care. Bringing together 16 global experts, including paediatric dentists, endodontists, and cariologists, this milestone event tackled critical aspects of pulp therapy for children and adolescents.

With eight meticulously curated scientific sessions, the programme explored pulp biology, diagnosis, and cutting-edge treatment approaches. Preceded by an extensive Delphi process, the Summit’s expert panel meeting culminated in consensus statements addressing four crucial areas:

  1. Pulp inflammation, diagnosis, and caries excavation,
  2. Managing pulpitis in primary teeth with deep caries,
  3. Managing pulpitis in permanent teeth with deep caries, and
  4. Managing pulp pathoses in primary and permanent teeth with traumatic injuries.

The Summit championed a shift toward conservative, biologically based pulp therapy, prioritising tissue preservation and regeneration. By bridging the gap between emerging evidence and clinical practice, it laid the groundwork for recommendations that will be published in 2025, offering clinicians globally clear, evidence-based guidance for managing pulpal conditions.

Looking ahead, these consensus recommendations promise to shape clinical decisions and drive future research in paediatric pulp therapy. The Summit’s collaborative spirit and scientific excellence underscore the IAPD’s unwavering commitment to advancing children’s oral health through evidence-based care.

🌐Spotlight on IAPD Consensus Recommendations

This month, we’re shining a spotlight on the Consensus Recommendation on Management of the Developing Dentition. Malocclusion, a condition characterised by misalignment of teeth and jaws, often begins in early childhood. This common dental issue has significant implications for oral health and can negatively impact a child’s quality of life. Children with malocclusion may experience difficulties with chewing, speech, and maintaining oral hygiene, potentially leading to more complex dental problems over time.

Paediatric dentists are uniquely positioned to make a lasting impact on their patients’ oral health by recognising and addressing the signs of malocclusion early. With a proactive approach, they can help ensure that children achieve healthy, functional, and aesthetically pleasing smiles.
