In Honour of International Women's Day

March 8, 2024, marked International Women’s Day, a global celebration of women’s achievements and contributions. On this significant occasion, the kick-off meeting for the PaFein+ Project, funded under the Erasmus+ Program, took place at the Kalyon Hotel in Istanbul, Turkey. We are delighted to announce the presence of Prof. Figen Seymen, the IAPD President, at this pivotal event. The meeting was led by prominent female researchers, underscoring the invaluable role of women in driving innovation in dental research and education.

The PaFein+ Project represents a collaborative initiative involving Marmara University, Istanbul Kent University, Romanian National Association of Paediatric Dentistry (IAPD National-Member Society), and Bambino Gesu Children’s Hospital in Italy. Its primary objective is to develop a comprehensive curriculum aimed at enhancing paediatric dental care, with a particular emphasis on alleviating pain and anxiety during children’s dental procedures.

Over the next 34 months, the project will focus on creating tailored educational materials for dental practitioners, paediatric dentistry specialisation programs, PhD students, and educators. The curriculum will prioritise Minimal Invasive Dentistry (MID) principles, advocating for early disease detection and preventive strategies to conserve tooth tissue.

A key aim of the PaFein+ Project is to reduce the need for sedation and general anaesthesia in paediatric dental procedures. By integrating modern behaviour guidance techniques, minimal invasive dentistry approaches, and pain-free dental injection techniques, the project seeks to deliver dental treatment that prioritises child comfort and safety.

To ensure widespread dissemination of its findings, PaFein+ will establish a dedicated website and actively engage with national and international conferences, paediatric dentistry association congresses, and various media platforms.

Prof. Figen Seymen’s participation underscores the significance of collaborative endeavours in advancing pediatric dental care. As the PaFein+ Project progresses, it holds promise for enhancing the dental treatment experience for children worldwide.

For more information on the PaFein+ Project and updates on its progress, please visit the official website.

🌐Spotlight on IAPD Consensus Recommendations

The International Association of Paediatric Dentistry (IAPD) has firmly joined the battle against caries, and this month, we’re shining a spotlight on the Consensus Recommendation on Management of Early Childhood Caries. In the words of our past president during a recent presentation at the Diocesan Museum in Leon: “Regardless of geographic location, dental caries remains a pervasive challenge, with significant implications for public health. There is not much difference between first world countries and developing countries. In the USA, for example, there is a very large group of people suffering from dental caries and having very serious problems. It is a public health problem in general. The root cause often lies in habits – both hygiene and dietary. Poor nutrition can compromise dental health, making teeth more susceptible to decay.”

PS: for our Spanish readers, see the full article in La Nueva Cronica here.

We urge all IAPD Members to utilise and share the IAPD Consensus recommendations. This invaluable resource, developed by the IAPD Science Committee, is freely available to support dental professionals in their efforts to combat caries and promote oral health worldwide. It’s available in English, French, Spanish and Italian!

Let’s work together to make a difference in the fight against dental caries!
