Executive Summary

Periodontal diseases in children and adolescents include a range of inflammatory conditions affecting the supporting structures of the teeth. While gingivitis is relatively common in paediatric populations, more severe forms of periodontal disease are less frequent but may be associated with systemic conditions or genetic disorders.

Early identification and management of periodontal conditions are essential to prevent progression and maintain long-term oral health.

Core principles include:

  • Early detection of gingival and periodontal conditions through clinical examination

  • Identification of local and systemic risk factors

  • Promotion of effective oral hygiene practices

  • Preventive strategies to control plaque and gingival inflammation

  • Referral for specialised care when advanced periodontal conditions are suspected

Appropriate management of periodontal diseases in children supports healthy oral development and helps prevent long-term complications.

IAPD Recommendations

Evidence-Based Recommendations

Gingivitis is the most common periodontal condition in children and adolescents and is primarily associated with dental plaque accumulation.

Effective plaque control through appropriate oral hygiene practices is essential for the prevention and management of gingival inflammation.

Regular dental examinations allow early detection and management of periodontal conditions in children.

(Evidence-based recommendations are not subject to global agreement scoring.)

Consensus-Based Recommendations

(Evaluated for Global Agreement in 2022)

Children presenting with severe or unusual periodontal conditions should be evaluated for potential underlying systemic or genetic disorders.

Management of periodontal diseases in children may require collaboration with medical specialists when systemic conditions are suspected.

Preventive education for children and caregivers should emphasise the importance of effective oral hygiene and regular dental visits.
