🌐Spotlight on IAPD Consensus Recommendations
This month, we’re shining a spotlight on the Consensus Recommendation on Paediatric Periodontal Disease. Assessing the gingival and periodontal health of paediatric patients is a fundamental aspect of dental care. While poor oral hygiene often leads to gingivitis in children, some may present with more severe symptoms—refractory, generalized gingivitis, unexplained tooth mobility and even alveolar bone loss. In these cases, early recognition is crucial.
Every dental examination should include a detailed documentation of the gingiva, periodontium, and tooth mobility. Once the permanent dentition is established, clinicians are encouraged to use probing techniques to confirm healthy alveolar bone levels, with dental radiographs and clinical photographs serving as important adjuncts. Such meticulous record keeping not only facilitates monitoring but also assists in early detection of potential systemic issues.
