Join Us in Cape Town for the 30th IAPD Congress: Refresh, Refocus, Renew

The International Association of Paediatric Dentistry (IAPD) is delighted to invite you to the 30th IAPD Congress, taking place in the vibrant city of Cape Town, South Africa – the first-ever IAPD Congress on the African continent.

This year’s Congress is more than just a scientific gathering — it is a call to action. A golden thread weaves through the theme, urging us as paediatric dentists to refresh our knowledge, refocus our efforts, and renew our commitment to delivering patient-centred care.

Paediatric dentistry demands a unique blend of clinical skill, empathy, and creativity. The IAPD Congress in Cape Town will not only provide a rich academic experience, but also the chance to connect with colleagues from around the world, collaborate across disciplines, and participate in a vibrant social programme designed to foster relationships and celebrate African culture — all under the warmth of the African sun.

Expect insightful keynote speakers, interactive workshops, and moments of relaxation, inspiration, and joy as we come together to share knowledge and grow as a global paediatric dental community.

In Memory of Dr Christopher Hughes

The IAPD expresses its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Dr. Christopher Hughes, whose recent passing is a great loss to the paediatric dental community.

As a former Chair of Paediatric Dentistry at the School of Dentistry, University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), Dr Hughes made a profound and lasting impact on both the institution and the field. His dedication to education, clinical excellence, and the advancement of paediatric dentistry earned him the respect and admiration of peers and students alike.

Dr Hughes will be remembered not only for his professional achievements and leadership but also for the warmth, kindness, and integrity with which he served the profession. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched and the high standards he helped to set in paediatric dental care.

The IAPD honours his memory with deep respect and appreciation.

🌐Spotlight on IAPD Consensus Recommendations

This month, we’re shining a spotlight on the Consensus Recommendation on Antibiotic Use in Paediatric Dentistry.

Antibiotics play an important role in managing infections, but their use in paediatric dentistry should be approached with caution. While antibiotics may be essential in cases of systemic infection, facial swelling, or signs of disease spread, they are often unnecessary when the infection is confined to the tooth and can be treated locally through extraction or root canal therapy. In many cases, removing the source of infection is the most effective solution.

When antibiotic therapy is indicated, a short course of 3 to 5 days is usually sufficient, as long as the child is showing signs of improvement. It remains important, however, that the full course is completed to reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance.

When treating children with complex medical conditions, it is best to consult with the child’s paediatrician to determine the most appropriate course of action, taking into account the procedure, the child’s health status, and the risk of infection.

By following these Consensus Recommendations, dental professionals can ensure the safe and effective use of antibiotics, helping to safeguard both oral and general health while contributing to the global effort to combat antibiotic resistance.
