This month, we’re shining a spotlight on the Consensus Recommendation on Management of Atraumatic Restorative Treatment. Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) is a minimally invasive dental procedure designed to halt the progression of carious lesions while preserving tooth structure. This technique prioritises patient comfort by removing decayed tissue using hand instruments, often eliminating the need for local anaesthesia and electrical equipment. Following the removal of decayed tissue, a restoration is completed using glass ionomer or other cement materials, known for their adhesion and fluoride-releasing properties. In developed countries, a similar technique—known as Interim Therapeutic Restoration (ITR)—is employed to manage severe early childhood caries. This approach focuses on controlling caries progression, leveraging the fluoride-releasing capabilities of glass ionomer cements to protect and strengthen teeth.
ART and ITR represent significant advancements in preventive and restorative care, offering practical solutions for dental health challenges across diverse populations. The emphasis on preserving tooth structure and providing fluoride benefits ensures these approaches remain relevant and valuable tools in modern dentistry.
